Mark 4 brings us into the teaching ministry of Jesus as He speaks to large crowds, Teach By The Lake. Through the parables of the seeds, the lamp, the growing seed, and the mustard seed, Jesus teaches about God’s kingdom and the condition of the human heart. Then the lesson moves from words to action as Jesus commands the wind and waves to become still. The disciples are left with one powerful question: Who is this?

📖 Mark 4:1-4 (NIV)
“4 Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge. 2 He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said: 3 “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.”
Jesus teaches from a boat because the crowd has become so large.
He uses familiar things—seeds, soil, lamps, crops, and a mustard seed—to explain truths about God’s kingdom.
Some hear but allow Satan to take it away. Some receive it with joy but have no root.
Others become distracted by worries, wealth, and worldly desires.
But the good soil receives the Word and produces a harvest.
Jesus then explains that God’s kingdom can begin with something that appears very small, like a mustard seed, yet grow into something far greater than expected.
As evening comes, Jesus tells His disciples to cross the lake.
A violent storm suddenly surrounds them.
While the disciples fear for their lives, Jesus is sleeping.
They wake Him, and Jesus commands the wind and waves:
“Quiet! Be still!”
Immediately, the storm becomes calm.
The disciples have witnessed miracles before, but now they see something different.
Creation itself responds to the command of Jesus.
Their question—“Who is this?”—is one of the most important questions in Mark.
📖 Mark 4:5-10 (NIV)
“5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.”
“9 Then Jesus said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”
“10 When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables.”
Jesus makes the meaning of the first parable clear: the farmer sows the Word.
The issue is not whether the seed has power.
The issue is what happens when the seed reaches the soil.
God’s truth can be heard without being accepted.
It can be received temporarily without developing roots.
It can be crowded out by worry, wealth, and worldly desires.
But when God’s Word reaches a receptive heart, it produces fruit.
The harvest may be thirty, sixty, or a hundred times what was planted.
Lesson: We cannot control every circumstance around us, but we can ask God to make our hearts good soil for His Word.
📖 Mark 4:11-16 (NIV)
” 11 He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables 12 so that,
“‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving,
and ever hearing but never understanding;
otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’[a]”
“13 Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable? 14 The farmer sows the word. 15 Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. 16 Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy.”
Jesus’ parables force us to look inward.
What is growing inside our hearts?
Faith?
Obedience?
Love?
Jesus does not simply ask people to hear.
He repeatedly says:
“Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”
Hearing God’s Word should lead somewhere.
It should change the way we think, the way we live, and the way we treat others.
Lesson: Spiritual growth happens when God’s Word moves from something we hear into something we live.
📖 Mark 4:17-24 (NIV)
“17 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 18 Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; 19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. 20 Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.”
“21 He said to them, “Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don’t you put it on its stand? 22 For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open. 23 If anyone has ears to hear, let them hear.”
“24 “Consider carefully what you hear,” he continued. “With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more. “
The mustard seed is tiny, yet Jesus uses it to describe the growth of God’s kingdom.
This connects beautifully with the disciples themselves.
They were ordinary people.
Yet Jesus was planting something in them that would eventually reach far beyond their own lives.
God does not always begin with something that looks powerful.
Sometimes He begins with a small seed.
Small act of obedience.
A simple step of faith.
The decision to follow Jesus.
Lesson: Never underestimate what God can grow from something small when it is surrendered to Him.
📖 Mark 4:25-32 (NIV)
“25 Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.”
“26 He also said, “This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. 27 Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. 28 All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. 29 As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.”
“30 Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? 31 It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. 32 Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.”
That is important.
They were not necessarily in trouble because they had disobeyed.
They were in the middle of the storm while following Jesus.
Sometimes obedience does not remove the storm.
But Jesus is still in the boat.
The disciples become frightened and ask, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
Jesus responds by calming the storm and then challenging their fear.
“Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
The lesson is not that believers will never experience storms.
The lesson is that our faith must remain anchored in Jesus even when the circumstances around us appear overwhelming.
📖 Mark 4:33-41 (NIV)
“33 With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. 34 He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.”
“35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
“39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.”
“40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
“41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
The disciples had seen Jesus heal people and drive out demons.
But now they witness His authority over nature itself.
He commands, and the waves become calm.
The disciples are not simply impressed.
They are terrified.
They ask:
“Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
Their question points directly toward the identity of Jesus.
He is not merely another teacher.
He is not simply a miracle worker.
Jesus Christ has authority that reaches beyond humanity and into creation itself.
God’s Covenant stands even when people cannot understand what He is doing.
Disciples did not understand everything Jesus taught.
They did not understand everything that happened on the lake.
Yet Jesus continued teaching them, correcting them, and building their faith.
The seed teaches us that God’s Word continues working even when we cannot see the growth.
A Mustard seed teaches us that God’s kingdom can begin in ways that appear small.
The storm teaches us that circumstances do not determine whether God’s promises remain true.
God’s plan does not depend upon the absence of storms.
His covenant stands in the storm.
His promises stand when faith is strong and when faith is being tested.
And the greatest fulfillment of God’s covenant will come through the redemption plan carried forward by Jesus Christ.
Mark 4 teaches us to listen carefully, receive God’s Word, grow in faith, and trust Jesus when the storms come.
We should examine the soil of our own hearts.
Are we allowing God’s Word to take root?
The worries choking our faith?
Can worldly desires become more important than God?
Are we producing fruit?
And when the storms of life come, do we remember who is in the boat?
Jesus does not promise that we will never face difficult circumstances. But He teaches us that fear does not have to control us.
The same Jesus who taught about the seed is the Jesus who stood up in the boat and commanded the storm.
The answer to the disciples’ question is becoming clearer: Jesus has authority over what we cannot control.
A little seed points us toward the Word of God.
Good soil points toward a heart willing to receive that Word.
The growing seed points toward God’s kingdom.
A mustard seed points toward the extraordinary things God can grow from small beginnings.
And the storm points directly toward the authority of Jesus Christ.
Mark 4 is not simply a collection of lessons about farming and storms.
It is revealing who Jesus is.
Jesus teaches with authority.
Jesus explains God’s kingdom.
He calls people to faith.
He brings peace into chaos.
And when He speaks, the wind and waves obey Him.
The chapter leaves us with the same question the disciples asked:
“Who is this?”
The answer leads us to Jesus Christ—the Son of God, the One through whom God’s redemption plan moves forward, and the One we can trust when the waters become rough.
The seed may begin small. The storm may become powerful. But Jesus remains greater than both.
