Those Mutilators of the Flesh: Lord Jesus Christ Has Everything Under Control

Paul warns believers not to place confidence in the flesh, Those Mutilators of the Flesh, but to rejoice in Jesus Christ alone. Through faith, God’s covenant and redemption plan offer righteousness, eternal hope, and the promise of transformation. As citizens of heaven, believers press toward God’s calling with joy, knowing the Lord Jesus Christ reigns over all things and will bring everything under His perfect control.

Obedience • God’s Covenant • Flesh • God by the Spirit • Transform Our Lowly Bodies • Redemption Plan • Faith • Joy

📖 Philippians 3:1–3

“3 Further, my brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord! It is no trouble for me to write the same things to you again, and it is a safeguard for you. Watch out for those dogs, those evildoers, those mutilators of the flesh. For it is we who are the circumcision, we who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh—

Put No Confidence in the Flesh

📖 Philippians 3:4–10

“though I myself have reasons for such confidence.

If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: “circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless.”

“7 But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in[a] Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. 10 I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,”

Paul begins by urging believers to rejoice in the Lord, reminding them that repeating God’s truth is a safeguard for their faith.

He warns the church against those who placed their confidence in outward religious rituals rather than in Jesus Christ. These “mutilators of the flesh” trusted in external works instead of the transforming work of God through His Spirit.

Paul explains that if anyone could boast in human accomplishments, he certainly could. He possessed an impressive religious heritage, strict obedience to the Law, and remarkable zeal.

Yet none of these could save him.

God’s covenant has never been fulfilled through human achievement but through His grace and the work of Jesus Christ.

The Surpassing Worth of Knowing Christ – Those Mutilators of the Flesh

📖 Philippians 3:11–16

“11 and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.”

“12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

“15 All of us, then, who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. 16 Only let us live up to what we have already attained.”

Everything Paul once valued became insignificant compared to knowing Jesus Christ.

He willingly counted his accomplishments as loss because salvation is not earned through works but received through faith.

Paul desired more than knowledge about Christ.

He longed to:

  • Know Christ personally.

  • Experience the power of His resurrection.

  • Share in His sufferings.

  • Be transformed into His likeness.

  • Share in the hope of the resurrection.

This is the heart of God’s redemption plan—bringing sinners into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ through faith.

Press On Toward the Goal – Those Mutilators of the Flesh

📖 Philippians 3:17–19

“17 Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. 18 For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things.”

Although Paul had experienced God’s grace, he recognized that his spiritual journey was not yet complete.

He refused to live in the past.

Instead, he pressed forward toward God’s heavenly calling.

Every believer continues growing through obedience, faith, and dependence upon Christ.

Spiritual maturity is not perfection but continual pursuit of Jesus Christ until the day He completes His work in us.

Our Citizenship Is in Heaven – Those Mutilators of the Flesh

📖 Philippians 3:20–21

20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.”

Paul urges believers to follow faithful examples and avoid those whose lives are centered on earthly desires.

Those who reject Christ focus on temporary pleasures, but believers belong to a greater kingdom.

“Our citizenship is in heaven.”

Christians eagerly await the return of the Lord Jesus Christ, who possesses complete authority over all creation.

By His sovereign power, Jesus will transform our lowly earthly bodies into glorious bodies like His own.

This future hope fills believers with confidence, joy, and faithful endurance while living in the present world.

God’s Covenant Still Stands

From the beginning, God’s covenant has pointed toward complete restoration through Jesus Christ.

The flesh cannot accomplish what only God’s grace can provide.

Through faith in Christ, believers receive righteousness, become citizens of heaven, and look forward to the resurrection.

God’s redemption plan does not end with forgiveness—it culminates in complete transformation when Christ returns and makes all things new.

What This Teaches Us

  • Rejoice continually in the Lord.

  • Salvation comes through faith, not human achievement.

  • Knowing Christ is life’s greatest treasure.

  • Spiritual growth requires continual perseverance.

  • Believers should focus on eternal priorities rather than earthly success.

  • Our true citizenship is in heaven.

  • Jesus Christ rules over all things with complete authority.

  • God’s redemption plan ends in the glorious transformation of His people.

Final Thought

Philippians 3 reminds believers that nothing compares to knowing Jesus Christ. Human accomplishments, religious traditions, and worldly success cannot provide the righteousness that comes only through faith. As citizens of heaven, believers press forward with joy and perseverance, trusting God’s covenant and redemption plan. While waiting for Christ’s return, we live by the Spirit, confident that the Lord Jesus Christ has everything under His control and will one day transform our lowly bodies into the likeness of His glorious body.
