📖 Exodus 40:1–3
“40 Then the Lord said to Moses: 2 “Set up the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, on the first day of the first month. 3 Place the ark of the covenant law in it and shield the ark with the curtain.”
📖 Exodus 40:4-8
“4 Bring in the table and set out what belongs on it. Then bring in the lampstand and set up its lamps. 5 Place the gold altar of incense in front of the ark of the covenant law and put the curtain at the entrance to the tabernacle.”
“6 “Place the altar of burnt offering in front of the entrance to the tabernacle, the tent of meeting; 7 place the basin between the tent of meeting and the altar and put water in it. 8 Set up the courtyard around it and put the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard.”
After months of preparation, instruction, craftsmanship, and obedience, the Tabernacle was finally ready to be assembled.
From Egypt to Mount Sinai, God had been teaching His people. Former slaves had learned new skills, craftsmen had developed their gifts, leaders had grown in responsibility, and the nation had received God’s covenant instructions.
Exodus 40 marks the completion of that work.
The Tabernacle was not simply a structure.
It represented God’s presence dwelling among His people and served as another step forward in His redemption plan.
📖 Exodus 40:9–15
9 “Take the anointing oil and anoint the tabernacle and everything in it; consecrate it and all its furnishings, and it will be holy. 10 Then anoint the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils; consecrate the altar, and it will be most holy. 11 Anoint the basin and its stand and consecrate them.”
12 “Bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance to the tent of meeting and wash them with water. 13 Then dress Aaron in the sacred garments, anoint him and consecrate him so he may serve me as priest. 14 Bring his sons and dress them in tunics. 15 Anoint them just as you anointed their father, so they may serve me as priests. Their anointing will be to a priesthood that will continue throughout their generations.”
The Lord instructed Moses to set up the Tabernacle on the first day of the first month.
Every item had a designated place:
The Ark of the Covenant.
The table and bread.
The lampstand.
The altar of incense.
The altar of burnt offering.
The basin for washing.
Aaron and his sons were also consecrated for priestly service.
Nothing was left to chance.
God’s work was accomplished according to God’s design.
The same God who delivered Israel from Egypt was now establishing a place where He would meet with His people.

“16 Moses did everything just as the Lord commanded him.”
“17 So the tabernacle was set up on the first day of the first month in the second year. 18 When Moses set up the tabernacle, he put the bases in place, erected the frames, inserted the crossbars and set up the posts. 19 Then he spread the tent over the tabernacle and put the covering over the tent, as the Lord commanded him.
20 He took the tablets of the covenant law and placed them in the ark, attached the poles to the ark and put the atonement cover over it. 21 Then he brought the ark into the tabernacle and hung the shielding curtain and shielded the ark of the covenant law, as the Lord commanded him.”
“22 Moses placed the table in the tent of meeting on the north side of the tabernacle outside the curtain 23 and set out the bread on it before the Lord, as the Lord commanded him.”
One phrase appears repeatedly throughout the chapter:
“As the Lord commanded Moses.”
Moses followed God’s instructions carefully.
The work that began with God’s instructions was finished through faithful obedience.
The Tabernacle became a testimony that God’s plans are accomplished when His people follow His direction.
📖 Exodus 40:24–29
“24 He placed the lampstand in the tent of meeting opposite the table on the south side of the tabernacle 25 and set up the lamps before the Lord, as the Lord commanded him.”
“26 Moses placed the gold altar in the tent of meeting in front of the curtain 27 and burned fragrant incense on it, as the Lord commanded him.”
“28 Then he put up the curtain at the entrance to the tabernCacle. 29 He set the altar of burnt offering near the entrance to the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, and offered on it burnt offerings and grain offerings, as the Lord commanded him.”
Before leaving Egypt, the Israelites were slaves.
God’s commands.Yet throughout their wilderness journey, God taught them.
God was building His people while they were building the Tabernacle.
📖 Exodus 40:30-34
“30 He placed the basin between the tent of meeting and the altar and put water in it for washing, 31 and Moses and Aaron and his sons used it to wash their hands and feet. 32 They washed whenever they entered the tent of meeting or approached the altar, as the Lord commanded Moses.”
“33 Then Moses set up the courtyard around the tabernacle and altar and put up the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard. And so Moses finished the work.”
“34 Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.”
The Tabernacle was not built by Moses alone.
Many people contributed.
Each person had a role.
God’s work often advances through people working together under His direction.
The Tabernacle stands as a reminder that every contribution matters when it serves God’s purposes.
The Tabernacle and its furnishings were anointed with oil.
Aaron and his sons were washed, clothed, and consecrated.
Everything connected to worship was set apart as holy.
God was teaching Israel an important truth:
His presence is holy.
Approaching Him requires reverence, obedience, and preparation.
The Tabernacle was not ordinary.
It belonged to God.
📖 Exodus 40:35-36
“35 Moses could not enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.”
“36 In all the travels of the Israelites, whenever the cloud lifted from above the tabernacle, they would set out;”
After Moses completed the work, something extraordinary happened.
“Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.”
God’s presence filled the structure that had been prepared according to His instructions.
The same God who appeared in Egypt, parted the Red Sea, and descended upon Mount Sinai now dwelled among His people.
The covenant relationship was visible.
God was with them.
His presence was their greatest blessing.
📖 Exodus 40:37–38
“37 but if the cloud did not lift, they did not set out—until the day it lifted. 38 So the cloud of the Lord was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the Israelites during all their travels.”
The cloud over the Tabernacle became Israel’s guide.
When the cloud moved, the people moved.
When the cloud remained, the people stayed.
By day, the cloud was visible.
By night, fire appeared within the cloud.
“So the cloud of the Lord was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night.”
The fire served as a continual reminder that God was present.
Israel did not move according to their own plans.
They moved according to God’s leading.
The completion of the Tabernacle fulfilled an important part of God’s covenant relationship with Israel.
God had delivered them from slavery.
The Tabernacle also pointed forward to God’s greater redemption plan.
Throughout Scripture, God continues moving His plan of redemption forward one step at a time.
God provides detailed direction for His work.
Obedience is often the key to completing God’s assignments.
Seasons of preparation are never wasted.
God develops new skills and gifts in His people.
Great accomplishments often require teamwork.
God’s presence is holy and worthy of reverence.
Waiting on God’s timing requires faith.
God’s guidance is available for those who follow Him.
God’s covenant promises remain trustworthy.
Every step of history moves His redemption plan forward.
Exodus 40 closes the book with a powerful picture of God’s faithfulness. What began with Israel’s slavery in Egypt ends with God’s glory filling the Tabernacle. Through instruction, obedience, learning, teamwork, and covenant faithfulness, the Lord prepared a dwelling place among His people.
The cloud by day and the fire by night became visible reminders that God was leading Israel toward the Promised Land. His presence provided guidance, protection, and assurance for every step of the journey.
The lesson remains timeless: when God’s people follow His instructions, trust His timing, and walk in obedience, they can confidently move forward knowing that the same God who led Israel still guides His people today.
