James reminds believers that life is brief, like a mist that quickly disappears. Instead of pursuing worldly desires, we are called to live by the Spirit with humility, obedience, and trust in God’s will, making every day count for His eternal purpose.

📖 James 4:1
“4 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? “
James continues to challenge believers by exposing the source of many struggles. Conflicts, pride, selfish ambition, and worldly desires begin within the human heart. God calls His people to live differently—not according to the desires of the flesh, but by the guidance of His Spirit.
Life is brief, and every day is a gift from God. James reminds believers to humble themselves, seek God’s will, resist the devil, and live with eternity in view rather than temporary pleasures.
📖 James 4:2–3
“2 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.”
James begins by asking a searching question:
“What causes fights and quarrels among you?”
The answer is found within.
Selfish desires compete for control of the heart.
People pursue their own ambitions, leading to conflict, jealousy, and disappointment.
James also explains that many prayers go unanswered because they are motivated by selfish desires rather than God’s purposes.
Prayer is not about persuading God to fulfill our plans.
It is about aligning our hearts with His will.
📖 James 4:4–6
“4 You adulterous people,[a] don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us[b]? 6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:”
“God opposes the proud
James delivers a strong warning.
Choosing the values of the world over the ways of God creates spiritual conflict.
Worldliness places temporary pleasures above eternal priorities.
God desires wholehearted devotion from His people.
He opposes pride but gives grace to the humble.
Humility opens the door for God’s guidance, blessing, and transforming work.
📖 James 4:7–10
“7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.”
James provides one of the clearest instructions for spiritual victory.
“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
Victory begins with surrender.
As believers draw near to God, He draws near to them.
James calls for sincere repentance, purified hearts, and undivided devotion.
Double-minded believers attempt to follow both God and the world.
James reminds us that true peace comes from wholehearted obedience.
God promises to lift up those who humble themselves before Him.
📖 James 4:11–12
“11 Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister[d] or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. 12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?”
James warns believers against speaking evil of one another.
Only God is the perfect Lawgiver and Judge.
When we judge others with pride or malice, we place ourselves in a position that belongs to God alone.
Instead of condemning others, believers should extend grace, compassion, and encouragement.
Humility produces unity within the body of Christ.
📖 James 4:13–16
“13 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil.”
James turns attention to the uncertainty of life.
Many people confidently make plans for tomorrow.
Yet James asks:
“What is your life?”
His answer is simple and sobering:
“You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”
Life on earth is temporary.
No one is guaranteed tomorrow.
Rather than boasting about future plans, believers should acknowledge God’s sovereignty.
“If it is the Lord’s will…”
Those words reflect a heart that trusts God with every detail of life.
📖 James 4:17
“17 If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.”
James concludes with a principle that reaches beyond outward actions.
“If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.”
Obedience includes both avoiding evil and actively doing what is right.
Knowing God’s truth carries responsibility.
Faith grows as believers put His Word into practice.
James reminds believers that the Christian life is not guided by selfish ambition or worldly success.
It is guided by God’s Spirit.
Living by the flesh produces pride, conflict, envy, and sin.
Living by the Spirit produces humility, peace, obedience, patience, and dependence upon God.
Every decision becomes an opportunity to choose God’s will over our own desires.
Conflicts often begin with selfish desires.
Prayer should seek God’s will rather than personal gain.
Friendship with the world weakens spiritual devotion.
God gives grace to those who humble themselves.
Believers should resist the devil by submitting to God.
Humility draws us closer to God.
Life is brief, so live with eternity in view.
Every plan should be surrendered to God’s will.
Knowing what is right brings the responsibility to obey.
Living by the Spirit leads to peace, wisdom, and spiritual maturity.
James reminds believers that life is fragile and temporary, like a mist that quickly disappears. Rather than living for selfish ambition or worldly success, God calls His people to walk in humility, seek His will, and depend on His Spirit each day. As believers submit to God, resist temptation, and choose obedience over pride, they discover the peace, wisdom, and grace that come from living with eternity in view. Every day is an opportunity to honor God, trusting that His plans are greater than our own.
