God’s redemption plan now moved into a visible display of His power before Egypt. Like God Before Pharaoh, Moses and Aaron stood before Pharaoh not in their own authority, but under the command of the Lord. Though Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, God’s covenant promises remained unchanged. Through signs, wonders, and judgment, the Lord began revealing His supremacy over Egypt’s rulers and false gods. Exodus 7 shows that when God commands His servants to act, He also provides the power needed to accomplish His purposes.

📖 Exodus 7:1 (NIV)
“7 Then the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet.”
📖 Exodus 7:2-3 (NIV)
“2 You are to say everything I command you, and your brother Aaron is to tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go out of his country. 3 But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and though I multiply my signs and wonders in Egypt,”
God’s covenant promises were no longer simply words spoken to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The time had come for God to demonstrate His power before Egypt and begin delivering His people. Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three when they stood before Pharaoh. Humanly speaking, they were unlikely candidates to confront the most powerful ruler in the world. Yet God does not depend upon human strength. He empowers those He calls and uses obedience to accomplish His redemption plan.
📖 Exodus 7:4-7 (NIV)
‘”4 he will not listen to you. Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and with mighty acts of judgment I will bring out my divisions, my people the Israelites.5 And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring the Israelites out of it.”
“6 Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord commanded them.7 Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three when they spoke to Pharaoh”
The Lord gave Moses an unusual assignment:
“See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and Aaron will be your prophet.”
God was not making Moses divine.
Rather, Moses would speak God’s words with God’s authority, while Aaron would serve as his spokesman.
The message was simple:
“Let my people go.”
God also revealed that Pharaoh’s heart would be hardened.
This would allow God to display His signs, wonders, and mighty acts of judgment throughout Egypt.
Moses and Aaron obeyed exactly as God commanded.
Despite their age, they stepped forward in faith.
📖 Exodus 7:8–13 (NIV)
“8 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 9 “When Pharaoh says to you, ‘Perform a miracle,’ then say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh,’ and it will become a snake.”
“10 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the Lord commanded. Aaron threw his staff down in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a snake. 11 Pharaoh then summoned wise men and sorcerers, and the Egyptian magicians also did the same things by their secret arts: 12 Each one threw down his staff and it became a snake. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs. 13 Yet Pharaoh’s heart became hard and he would not listen to them, just as the Lord had said.”
When Pharaoh demanded a miracle, Aaron threw down his staff.
It became a snake.
The Egyptian magicians copied the sign through their secret arts.
Yet something remarkable happened:
“Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs.”
This was more than a miracle.
It was a declaration.
The power of Egypt could imitate certain signs, but it could not overcome the power of the Lord.
God was already demonstrating His superiority over Pharaoh and the false gods of Egypt.
Still, Pharaoh hardened his heart.
Just as God had said, he refused to listen.
📖 Exodus 7:14–21 (NIV)
“14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is unyielding; he refuses to let the people go. 15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning as he goes out to the river.Confront him on the bank of the Nile, and take in your hand the staff that was changed into a snake. 16 Then say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to say to you: Let my people go, so that they may worship me in the wilderness. But until now you have not listened.
“17 This is what the Lord says: By this you will know that I am the Lord: With the staff that is in my hand I will strike the water of the Nile, and it will be changed into blood. 18 The fish in the Nile will die, and the river will stink; the Egyptians will not be able to drink its water.’”
“19 The Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Take your staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt—over the streams and canals, over the ponds and all the reservoirs—and they will turn to blood.’ Blood will be everywhere in Egypt, even in vessels[a] of wood and stone.”
“20 Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord had commanded. He raised his staff in the presence of Pharaoh and his officials and struck the water of the Nile, and all the water was changed into blood. 21 The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad that the Egyptians could not drink its water. Blood was everywhere in Egypt.”
The Nile River was the lifeblood of Egypt.
It supplied water, food, transportation, and prosperity.
God instructed Moses and Aaron to confront Pharaoh beside the river.
Then came the first plague.
Aaron stretched out his staff and struck the Nile.
Immediately:
The water became blood.
The fish died.
The river stank.
The Egyptians could not drink its water.
“Blood was everywhere in Egypt.”
The plague directly challenged Egypt’s confidence in its resources, its gods, and its self-sufficiency.
The Lord was showing that He alone controls creation.
📖 Exodus 7:22–24 (NIV)
“22 But the Egyptian magicians did the same things by their secret arts, and Pharaoh’s heart became hard; he would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said. 23 Instead, he turned and went into his palace, and did not take even this to heart. 24 And all the Egyptians dug along the Nile to get drinking water, because they could not drink the water of the river.”
The Egyptian magicians again imitated the miracle.
Instead of humbling himself, Pharaoh became more stubborn.
“Pharaoh’s heart became hard.”
He returned to his palace and ignored the suffering around him.
The people dug beside the Nile searching for drinkable water.
Yet Pharaoh refused to acknowledge the Lord.
Pride often blinds people to the truth standing directly before them.
📖 Exodus 7:25 (NIV)
“25 Seven days passed after the Lord struck the Nile.”
The plague remained for seven days.
Egypt endured the consequences of Pharaoh’s rebellion.
This was only the beginning.
God’s judgments were designed to reveal His power and expose the emptiness of Egypt’s false gods.
The Lord was preparing both Egypt and Israel to understand one central truth:
“I am the Lord.”
Throughout this chapter, God continues moving His covenant plan forward.
The promises made to Abraham were not forgotten.
The cries of Israel had been heard.
The time of redemption had arrived.
What appeared impossible for Moses was possible through God’s power.
The Lord was demonstrating that no king, nation, or false god could prevent Him from fulfilling His promises.
God empowers those He calls to serve Him.
Obedience matters more than human qualifications.
God’s authority is greater than every earthly power.
False gods and human pride cannot stand against the Lord.
God’s judgments reveal His holiness and power.
A hardened heart resists truth even when evidence is clear.
God’s covenant promises remain certain.
Redemption unfolds according to God’s perfect timing.
Exodus 7 marks the beginning of God’s direct confrontation with Pharaoh and the false gods of Egypt. Moses and Aaron stood before the most powerful ruler of their day, not because of their own strength, but because God had sent them.
The staff swallowing the snakes and the Nile turning to blood were signs that God’s redemption plan was advancing. Pharaoh’s heart remained hard, yet God’s purposes continued moving forward exactly as promised.
The lesson remains powerful today:
When God commands, obedience opens the door for His power to be revealed.
No obstacle is greater than God’s authority, and no promise He makes will ever fail.
