I Was in the Spirit: Four Living Creatures
John is taken, I was in the Spirit and given a glimpse of God’s heavenly throne, where all creation continually worships the Lord Almighty. Before revealing future events, God displays His holiness, majesty, and sovereign authority. This vision reminds believers that God’s covenant, His redemption plan, and His eternal kingdom are firmly established under His glorious throne.

4 After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.”
The Throne Room of Heaven
After Jesus completes His messages to the seven churches, John is invited into heaven. There he witnesses the majesty of God’s throne, the worship of heaven, and the holiness of the Creator. Before revealing future events, God first reminds us that He alone rules over heaven and earth and is worthy of all worship.
Come Up Here – I Was in the Spirit
📖 Revelation 4:1–2 (NIV)
“4 After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” 2 At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it.”
John sees an open door in heaven and hears a voice like a trumpet inviting him to come up.
Immediately, he is in the Spirit and stands before the throne of God.
This marks a new chapter in Revelation as God begins revealing what will take place according to His perfect plan.
Everything that follows begins with God’s authority.
The Throne of God – I Was in the Spirit
📖 Revelation 4:3–6 (NIV)
“3 And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne. 4 Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. 5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. In front of the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits[a] of God. 6 Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal.”
John describes the One seated on the throne with brilliant splendor, surrounded by the beauty of an emerald rainbow.
Around the throne sit twenty-four elders clothed in white with crowns of gold.
Lightning, thunder, and blazing lamps reveal God’s majesty, holiness, and power.
Before the throne lies a sea of glass, clear as crystal, reflecting the perfection and peace of God’s heavenly kingdom.
The Four Living Creatures – I Was in the Spirit
📖 Revelation 4:7–8 (NIV)
“7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. 8 Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying:”
“‘Holy, holy, holy
is the Lord God Almighty,’[b]
who was, and is, and is to come.”
Closest to the throne are four living creatures, each uniquely created to glorify God.
They resemble a lion, an ox, a man, and a flying eagle.
Covered with eyes and possessing six wings, they continually proclaim God’s perfect holiness.
Without ceasing they worship, saying:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.”
Their endless praise reminds us that God’s holiness never changes.
Worship Around the Throne

“9 Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:”

to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
and by your will they were created
and have their being
Whenever the four living creatures worship, the twenty-four elders fall before God’s throne.”
They lay their crowns before Him, acknowledging that every blessing, honor, and victory comes from God alone.
Together they proclaim His worthiness because He created all things, and by His will all creation exists.
Heaven’s highest purpose is to glorify its Creator.
God’s Covenant Still Stands
Before revealing the judgments that will come upon the earth, God first reveals His throne.
This vision reminds believers that the future is never out of God’s control.
The Creator who established His covenant throughout history continues to reign with perfect wisdom, power, and holiness.
His Redemption Plan is unfolding exactly as He promised, and every event in Revelation serves His eternal purpose.
What This Teaches Us
God alone sits upon the throne of heaven.
His authority extends over all creation.
Heaven continually worships God’s holiness.
Every blessing comes from the Creator.
God’s covenant is founded upon His eternal faithfulness.
Worship is the proper response to God’s majesty.
God’s Redemption Plan unfolds according to His perfect will.
Believers can trust the One who rules from heaven.
The future is secure because God remains on His throne.
Jesus Christ reveals God’s plan so believers may live with hope and confidence.

John’s vision reminds us that before we look at the events of the last days, we must first look at the throne of God. Heaven is filled with worship because God alone is holy, eternal, and worthy of all glory. The One who created all things continues to reign over history, fulfilling His covenant and His Redemption Plan.
