At the federal level, there are thousands of laws. These include the United States Code (U.S.C.), which is a compilation of all general and permanent federal statutes. The U.S.C. contains 54 titles, each covering a broad area of federal law. The number of individual statutes within each title varies, and new laws are added regularly while others may be repealed or amended.
Each of the 50 states has its own set of laws, which include state constitutions, statutes, regulations, and case law. These laws cover areas not addressed by federal law and often overlap with federal regulations.
Local governments, such as counties, cities, and towns, also have their own ordinances and regulations. These can number in the thousands for larger municipalities.
In addition to statutes, there are numerous regulations issued by federal and state agencies to implement and enforce laws. These regulations are published in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) at the federal level and in equivalent state publications.
