There is one God, one humanity in need of redemption, and one Savior.

Very Words Of God: Yes of Gentiles Too

Very Words Of God: Yes of Gentiles Too

Romans 3, Very Words Of God brings the reader to a place where human achievement cannot provide an escape from sin. The Law reveals our condition, but righteousness comes through faith in Jesus Christ. God remains faithful even when people are not. His Covenant reaches beyond one people to the whole world, because the God of the Jews is also the God of the Gentiles.

God’s Story Unfolds

📖 Romans  3:1 (NIV)

“3 What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision? “

Paul begins by recognizing the special responsibility given to the Jewish people: they were entrusted with the very words of God.

Their history, Law, promises, and Covenant were not meaningless.

They were part of God’s unfolding Redemption Plan.

But human unfaithfulness does not make God unfaithful.

God remains true even when people fail.

Paul then brings the entire human race into view. Jews and Gentiles alike are under the power of sin.

No person can stand before God claiming perfection.

The Law has an important purpose.

It does not give people something to boast about; it makes people conscious of sin.

It shows us where we fall short and points us toward our need for something greater.

Then comes the turning point: God’s righteousness is made known through faith in Jesus Christ.

All have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory, yet all who believe can be justified freely by God’s grace through the redemption found in Christ.

The God who gave His words to Israel is also the God of the Gentiles.

There is one God, one path of faith, and one Savior—Jesus Christ.

The Very Words Of God

📖 Romans  3:1-4 (NIV)

“3 What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision? 2 Much in every way! First of all, the Jews have been entrusted with the very words of God.”

“3 What if some were unfaithful? Will their unfaithfulness nullify God’s faithfulness? 4 Not at all! Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written:”

“So that you may be proved right when you speak
    and prevail when you judge.”[a]

The Jewish people had been entrusted with the very words of God.

This was a blessing, but it was also a responsibility.

Having God’s Word means having something precious that should not be ignored.

Scripture reveals God’s character, His Covenant, His promises, His warnings, and His Redemption Plan.

The words of God were not given simply to create knowledge.

They were given so people could know God and understand the path He was revealing.

God’s Word remains valuable because it points beyond human wisdom toward His truth.

God Remains Faithful – Very Words Of God

📖 Romans  3:5-8 (NIV)

“5 But if our unrighteousness brings out God’s righteousness more clearly, what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing his wrath on us? (I am using a human argument.) 6 Certainly not! If that were so, how could God judge the world? 7 Someone might argue, “If my falsehood enhances God’s truthfulness and so increases his glory, why am I still condemned as a sinner?” 8 Why not say—as some slanderously claim that we say—“Let us do evil that good may result”? Their condemnation is just!”

Paul asks what happens when some people are unfaithful.

Does their failure cancel God’s faithfulness?

Absolutely not.

People can break promises.

And people can change direction.

People can reject truth.

But God’s character does not change because humanity changes.

This gives us an important understanding of the Covenant.

God’s faithfulness does not depend upon humanity being perfect.

God remains true.

Our failures do not make God false.

Instead, our failures reveal why we need His mercy, grace, and redemption.

Sin Does Not Create An Excuse – Very Words Of God

📖 Romans  3:9-12 (NIV)

“9 What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantage? Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin. 10 As it is written:

“There is no one righteous, not even one;”

“11

    there is no one who understands;
there is no one who seeks God.”

“12

All have turned away,
    they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good,
    not even one.”[b]”

Paul addresses a dangerous argument: if human sin makes God’s righteousness more visible, why not continue doing evil?

Paul rejects the argument completely.

God’s goodness is never permission for evil.

Grace should never become an excuse to practice sin.

God’s mercy is an invitation to turn toward Him, not permission to deliberately walk away.

There is a difference between an imperfect person who falls and a person who decides that evil no longer matters.

God knows the heart.

Jew And Gentile Are Under Sin – Very Words Of God

📖 Romans  3:13-16 (NIV)

“13

“Their throats are open graves;
    their tongues practice deceit.”[c]
“The poison of vipers is on their lips.”[d]”

“14

“Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”[e]”

“15

“Their feet are swift to shed blood;”

“16

ruin and misery mark their ways,”

Paul removes the idea that one group can claim moral superiority over another.

Jews and Gentiles alike are under the power of sin.

This is not an attack on one people.

It is a picture of humanity.

Every person needs God.

The passage describes humanity’s words, actions, attitudes, violence, bitterness, deceit, and lack of reverence for God.

The problem is deeper than outward behavior.

Sin reaches into the human heart.

No person can honestly stand before God and say, “I do not need forgiveness.”

The Law Reveals Our Sin – Very Words Of God

  📖 Romans  3:17-20 (NIV)

“17

and the way of peace they do not know.”[f]”

“18

“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”[g]”

“19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. 20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.”

The Law serves an important purpose.

It makes humanity conscious of sin.

The Law is like a mirror.

A mirror can show what is wrong, but the mirror itself does not repair the problem.

Likewise, knowing God’s standard reveals where we fall short.

It does not give us a reason to boast.

Romans 3 moves the reader away from trusting personal accomplishment and toward recognizing the need for God’s righteousness.

The Law helps us see the problem.

Jesus Christ provides the answer.

Righteousness Through Faith – Very Words Of God

📖 Romans  3:21-24 (NIV)

“21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness is given through faith in[h] Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. “

Paul now reveals the heart of the Gospel: God’s righteousness is made known through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.

There is no difference between Jew and Gentile in their need for salvation.

All have sinned.

All have fallen short of God’s glory.

And all who believe can receive justification through God’s grace and the redemption that came through Jesus Christ.

This is where human boasting ends.

Salvation is not something we manufacture through human achievement.

It is something God provides through Jesus.

One God For Everyone – Very Words Of God

📖 Romans  3:25-28 (NIV)

“25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement,[i] through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.”

“27 Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith. 28 For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.”

Paul asks a powerful question: Is God the God of the Jews only?

No.

He is also the God of the Gentiles.

There is one God, and He provides justification through faith.

This reveals the worldwide reach of God’s Redemption Plan.

The Gospel is not limited to one nation, one family, or one ethnic group.

The Covenant story that began through Israel ultimately points toward God’s work reaching the nations.

Jesus Christ becomes the bridge through which God’s salvation is proclaimed to the world.

Faith Upholds The Law – Very Words Of God

📖 Romans  3:29-31 (NIV)

“29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, 30 since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith. 31 Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.”

Faith does not make God’s Law meaningless.

Paul says that faith upholds the Law.

The Law reveals God’s standard and exposes sin.

Faith recognizes that we cannot save ourselves and turns toward the One who can.

This creates a proper relationship between Law and grace.

The Law helps us understand our need.

Grace provides what we cannot provide for ourselves.

Faith receives what God has provided.

Jesus Christ stands at the center of the Redemption Plan.

God’s Covenant Stands

God’s Covenant stands because God’s faithfulness does not depend upon human perfection.

The words entrusted to Israel remain part of His unfolding story, and the promises contained in Scripture continue pointing toward His righteousness and Redemption Plan.

Romans 3 expands the picture: Jew and Gentile alike are accountable to God, and both need His mercy.

There is no room for boasting because salvation is not earned by human achievement.

God remains faithful, and through Jesus Christ, His grace reaches everyone who believes.

What This Teaches Us

Romans 3 teaches us to stop comparing ourselves with other people and look honestly at our relationship with God.

Everyone falls short of His glory.

The Law helps us recognize sin, while faith leads us toward God’s grace.

We do not need to pretend we are perfect.

We need to recognize our need for God.

That recognition should not produce hopelessness.

It should produce faith.

God’s answer to humanity’s sin is not another opportunity for human boasting.

His answer is Jesus Christ.

Every Story Leads To Jesus Christ

Romans 3 brings the entire Bible story into focus.

God’s words, the Law, the Prophets, the Covenant, Israel, the Gentiles, sin, judgment, mercy, grace, and faith all move toward God’s Redemption Plan.

Humanity cannot reach God’s glory through its own works.

Jesus Christ came as the One through whom redemption is provided.

His sacrifice demonstrates God’s righteousness while making forgiveness possible for those who believe.

The God of Israel is also the God of the Gentiles.

There is one God, one humanity in need of redemption, and one Savior.

Jesus Christ stands at the center of the story.
