Born Of God: By Being In His Son

Born Of God: By Being In His Son

John brings his message to a powerful conclusion: those who believe that Jesus is the Christ are Born Of God. Faith is not simply an idea we accept—it becomes a relationship with the Son. Through Jesus Christ, believers receive eternal life, overcome the world through faith, and learn to live under God’s direction rather than the control of the evil one.

God’s Story Unfolds

📖 1 John  5:1 (NIV)

“5 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. “

God’s story has always moved toward Jesus Christ.

From the beginning, humanity struggled with sin, rebellion, envy, and the influence of evil.

Yet God continued His Covenant and His Redemption Plan.

The promises of Scripture pointed toward the Messiah who would bring salvation and eternal life.

John now makes the connection direct: “Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God.”

The believer’s victory is not found in human strength. It is found in faith.

Jesus came by water and blood, and the Spirit testifies to who He is.

God Himself has given testimony concerning His Son.

This testimony carries a promise greater than anything this temporary world can offer: eternal life is found in Jesus Christ.

John also gives believers confidence.

They can approach God in prayer, care for brothers and sisters who are struggling with sin, and trust that the Son of God protects those who belong to Him.

The chapter ends with a simple warning: keep yourselves from idols.

Anything that takes the place of God can pull the heart away from the truth.

John wants believers to remain in Jesus Christ, because in Him is true life.

Believing Jesus Is The Christ – Born Of God

📖 1 John  5:1-4 (NIV)

“5 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. “

John begins with the foundation of faith:

“Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God.”

The identity of Jesus cannot be separated from the Gospel.

Jesus is the Christ—the Messiah God promised.

Believing this changes the relationship between God and the believer.

Faith is not merely acknowledging that Jesus existed.

It means trusting who He is and what God has accomplished through Him.

This belief becomes the foundation for obedience.

John explains that loving God means carrying out His commands.

Love and obedience therefore belong together.

Grace does not make obedience unnecessary.

Instead, grace gives us a reason to follow the One who saved us.

Faith Overcomes The World – Born Of God

📖 1 John  5:5-8(NIV)

“5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.”

“6 This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the[a] Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. “

John says something remarkable:

“Everyone born of God overcomes the world.”

The victory is not based on wealth, influence, power, or human achievement.

“This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.”

The world constantly offers competing priorities.

Envy can pull us toward comparison.

Evil can tempt us toward compromise.

Success can become more important than God.

But faith gives believers another perspective.

This life is temporary.

God’s promise is eternal.

Believing in Jesus Christ gives us a foundation that does not depend on everything going right in this present world.

Our victory begins with trusting the One who has already overcome.

God’s Testimony About His Son – Born Of God

📖 1 John  5:9-12 (NIV)

” 9 We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.”

John points to the Spirit, the water, and the blood as witnesses concerning Jesus Christ.

The important point is that God Himself has testified about His Son.

Human testimony can be accepted, but God’s testimony is greater.

John presents the choice clearly: believe the testimony God has given about Jesus, or reject it.

And the testimony is this:

“God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.”

Eternal life is not presented as something humanity can create for itself.

It is God’s gift.

It is found in the Son.

This keeps the believer focused on Jesus rather than on personal achievement.

Eternal Life Is In The Son – Born Of God

📖 1 John  5:13-16 (NIV)

“13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.”

“16 If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that. “

John makes the message unmistakably clear:

“Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.”

This is one of the strongest statements in the chapter.

The world offers many paths to temporary satisfaction, but John points to one source of eternal life: Jesus Christ.

This is where God’s Redemption Plan reaches its purpose.

He came into the world.

Jesus gave His life.

Jesus was raised.

And through faith in Him, believers have the promise of eternal life.

John even says he wrote these things so believers can know that they have eternal life.

That knowledge produces confidence—not because we are perfect, but because God’s promise is trustworthy.

Remain In His Son – Born Of God

📖 1 John  5:17-21 (NIV)

“17 All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.”

“18 We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them. 19 We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. 20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.”

“21 Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.”

John ends by bringing everything back to relationship.

“We are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ.”

This is the heart of the chapter.

Born of God means belonging to God.

Overcoming the world means trusting God.

Eternal life means receiving life through His Son.

And remaining faithful means keeping ourselves from idols that could take God’s place.

An idol does not have to be a statue.

Anything that takes the place of God in our hearts can become an idol.

John’s final message is therefore simple:

Stay connected to Jesus Christ.

Believe in Him.

Trust Him.

Obey His commands.

Love others.

Reject the influence of the evil one.

And remember that true life is found in the Son.

God’s Covenant Stands

God’s Covenant stands because God’s promises are fulfilled through Jesus Christ.

The Messiah promised throughout Scripture came into the world.

God’s testimony concerning His Son remains the foundation of Christian faith.

Through Jesus, God offers eternal life.

Through faith, believers overcome the world.

And through grace, sinners can be brought into a relationship with God.

And through obedience, believers demonstrate their love for Him.

The covenant does not depend upon the temporary circumstances of this world.

It rests upon the faithfulness of God and the finished work of Jesus Christ.

What This Teaches Us

1 John 5 teaches us where our confidence should come from.

It does not come from possessions, popularity, human strength, or the approval of the world.

It comes from Jesus Christ.

If we believe He is the Messiah, we are called to live as people who belong to God.

Faith should produce obedience.

Love should produce action. Prayer should produce trust.

We will still face temptation and struggles with sin, but the evil one does not have the final word over those who belong to Christ.

Our lives here are temporary.

The promise of God is eternal.

Every Story Leads To Jesus Christ

The Bible’s story continues to point toward the same place: Jesus Christ.

God created humanity. Sin entered the world.

God’s Covenant continued through generations.

Prophets spoke about the coming Messiah.

The Redemption Plan moved forward until Jesus came.

John now gives us the central truth plainly:

“God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.”

Jesus is not simply another part of the story.

He is the center of God’s Redemption Plan.

Through Him, believers move from temporary life toward eternal life.

Through faith, they can overcome the world.

And through grace, they can receive what they could never earn themselves.

John’s final warning about idols reminds us not to allow anything temporary to replace what is eternal.

The world may offer many things.

But true life is found in Jesus Christ.
