Spirit Of God: Given Us This Command

Spirit Of God: Given Us This Command

1 John 4 teaches believers not to accept every spiritual message simply because it sounds religious. We are called to test what we hear against the truth about Jesus Christ. At the same time, John gives us a command that cannot be separated from genuine faith: love one another. Spirit Of God, God’s truth, and God’s love work together.

God’s Story Unfolds

📖 1 John  4:1 (NIV)

“4 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

Throughout Scripture, God has warned His people to recognize the difference between truth and deception.

False prophets appeared in the Old Testament, false teachers challenged the early church, and John warns that spiritual deception continues in the world.

The test begins with Jesus Christ.

John says that the Spirit of God acknowledges that Jesus Christ came in the flesh.

This matters because Jesus is not simply a teacher or example.

He is the Son of God who came into the world as part of God’s Redemption Plan.

But John does not stop with recognizing truth. He connects truth with love.

God demonstrated His love by sending His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Because God first loved us, believers are called to love one another.

This gives us a powerful connection between faith and everyday life.

We cannot claim to know God while deliberately rejecting the love He commands us to show.

The world is temporary, but God’s love reaches toward eternity.

Judgment is coming, but John teaches that believers can have confidence because God’s love is being made complete in them.

Test The Spirits – Spirit Of God

📖 1 John  4:1-4 (NIV)

“4 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.”

“4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. “

“Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.”

John begins with discernment.

Not everything that sounds spiritual comes from God.

A person can speak confidently, appear religious, or attract a crowd and still teach something that is contrary to the truth.

The believer therefore has a responsibility to test what is being taught.

John gives us a central test: Does the message acknowledge that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh?

Jesus cannot be removed from Christianity without removing the center of God’s Redemption Plan.

Faith requires more than believing something feels right.

We must compare what we hear with the truth God has given us.

Greater Is The One In You – Spirit Of God

📖 1 John  4:5-8 (NIV)

“5 They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit[a] of truth and the spirit of falsehood.”

“7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.“

John reminds believers that they are from God and have overcome the false spirits because:

“The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”

This is a message of confidence.

The world can be loud. Falsehood can be persuasive.

Envy, pride, fear, and self-interest can influence people.

But believers do not have to live overwhelmed by what surrounds them.

God’s Spirit provides a foundation for truth.

The world speaks from the world’s viewpoint, while those who belong to God are called to listen to God’s truth.

Our temporary surroundings do not determine our eternal destination.

Trust God even when the world speaks with a different voice.

God Is Love – Spirit Of God

📖 1 John  4:9-12 (NIV)

“9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.”

John gives us one of the clearest statements in Scripture:

“God is love.”

But John does not leave love as an abstract idea.

God showed His love by sending His one and only Son into the world so that we might live through Him.

This is where God’s love becomes connected to the Redemption Plan.

Jesus Christ came as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

We did not begin the process by loving God perfectly.

“He loved us and sent his Son.”

Grace comes first.

Our response is faith, gratitude, obedience, and love toward others.

God’s love is not merely something we talk about.

It becomes something we receive and then demonstrate.

Love Removes Fear – Spirit Of God

📖 1 John  4:13-16 (NIV)

“13 This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. 16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.

God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.”

John connects God’s love with the coming day of judgment.

For many people, judgment creates fear.

But John says that God’s love can give believers confidence because:

“There is no fear in love.”

This does not mean judgment is not real.

John has already warned about sin, deception, and accountability.

Instead, the believer can face the future with confidence because salvation rests in God’s love demonstrated through Jesus Christ.

Perfect love drives out fear because fear focuses on punishment, while God’s completed love points the believer toward relationship, forgiveness, and eternal hope.

We are living in a temporary world, but God’s love prepares us for eternity.

Given Us This Command – Spirit Of God

📖 1 John  4:17-21 (NIV)

” 17 This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.”

“19 We love because he first loved us. 20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. 21 And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.”

John finishes with something simple and powerful:

“Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.”

This is not presented as an optional part of Christianity.

If someone claims to love God while deliberately hating another person, John calls that claim into question.

We cannot see God with our physical eyes, but we can see the people around us.

That gives us an opportunity to make God’s invisible love visible.

Love becomes action.

Love becomes patience.

And it becomes forgiveness.

Love becomes generosity.

Love becomes truth.

And ultimately, love becomes obedience to the command God has given us.

God’s Covenant Stands

God’s Covenant stands because God has consistently revealed His character through His actions.

He sent prophets. He gave promises.

He provided His Word.

And ultimately, He sent Jesus Christ into the world as the Savior.

The Spirit God gives believers helps them recognize truth and remain connected to God.

The covenant does not ask us to blindly accept every message.

It calls us to discern, believe, trust, and obey.

God’s love has been demonstrated through Jesus Christ, and His command is clear: those who love God must also love one another.

What This Teaches Us

1 John 4 teaches us that truth and love cannot be separated.

We need discernment because not every spiritual message comes from God.

We need faith because Jesus Christ is at the center of God’s truth.

We need love because God first loved us.

The world may offer many competing voices, but the believer can return to the foundation: Jesus Christ came in the flesh, God sent His Son, and God’s people are commanded to love one another.

We do not have to live controlled by fear.

We can trust God, follow His command, and allow His Spirit to work within us.

Every Story Leads To Jesus Christ

The message of 1 John 4 reaches back across the entire Bible.

Humanity fell into sin.

God continued His Covenant. Prophets spoke God’s truth.

False voices repeatedly tried to turn people away.

Yet God’s Redemption Plan continued moving forward.

Then Jesus Christ came.

God’s love became visible.

Jesus came in the flesh.

He became the atoning sacrifice for sin.

He was sent as the Savior of the world.

Now the Spirit God gives believers testifies to the truth about Jesus.

That brings us back to the command: love one another.

The story is bigger than our temporary lives.

Judgment is real, eternity is real, and God’s promises are real.

But John gives believers hope: God is love, Jesus Christ is the Savior, the Spirit has been given to us, and we can trust the One who first loved us.
