📖 Daniel 10:1–3 (NIV)
“10 In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, a revelation was given to Daniel (who was called Belteshazzar). Its message was true and it concerned a great war.[a] The understanding of the message came to him in a vision.”
“2 At that time I, Daniel, mourned for three weeks. 3 I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over.”
📖 Daniel 10:4-7 (NIV)
“4 On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was standing on the bank of the great river, the Tigris, 5 I looked up and there before me was a man dressed in linen, with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist. 6 His body was like topaz, his face like lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude.”
“7 I, Daniel, was the only one who saw the vision; those who were with me did not see it, but such terror overwhelmed them that they fled and hid themselves.”
During the third year of King Cyrus of Persia, God gave Daniel another revelation concerning a great war and events that would unfold in the future.
Although the vision was true, its meaning was difficult to understand.
Daniel humbled himself before God by mourning for three weeks. During this time he fasted, eating no choice food, drinking no wine, and setting aside every comfort while seeking God’s understanding.
His response reminds us that spiritual understanding often begins with humility, prayer, and complete dependence upon God rather than human wisdom.
📖 Daniel 10:8-10 (NIV)
“8 So I was left alone, gazing at this great vision; I had no strength left, my face turned deathly pale and I was helpless. “9 Then I heard him speaking, and as I listened to him, I fell into a deep sleep, my face to the ground.”
“10 A hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees. “
While standing beside the great Tigris River, Daniel looked up and saw a glorious heavenly messenger clothed in linen with a belt of pure gold.
His appearance reflected the majesty of heaven—his face shone like lightning, his eyes blazed like fire, his body gleamed like precious stone, and his voice sounded like a great multitude.
Although those with Daniel could not see the vision, overwhelming fear caused them to flee.
Daniel alone remained, completely overwhelmed by God’s glory. His strength left him, his face became pale, and he fell to the ground in deep weakness before the heavenly messenger.
The presence of God’s holiness revealed both His greatness and man’s complete dependence upon Him.
📖 Daniel 10:11–15 (NIV)
“11 He said, “Daniel, you who are highly esteemed, consider carefully the words I am about to speak to you, and stand up, for I have now been sent to you.” And when he said this to me, I stood up trembling.”
12 Then he continued, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them. 13 But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia. 14 Now I have come to explain to you what will happen to your people in the future, for the vision concerns a time yet to come.”
“15 While he was saying this to me, I bowed with my face toward the ground and was speechless. “
The messenger touched Daniel and helped him to his hands and knees before speaking words of great encouragement.
“Daniel, you who are highly esteemed.”
From the very first day Daniel humbled himself before God and sought understanding, his prayer had been heard.
The messenger explained that he had been delayed twenty-one days because of spiritual opposition from the prince of Persia until Michael, one of God’s chief princes, came to assist him.
Daniel was then told that the vision concerned future events involving God’s people.
This remarkable account reminds us that God hears every sincere prayer immediately, even when unseen spiritual battles delay the visible answer.
📖 Daniel 10:16–19 (NIV)
“16 Then one who looked like a man[b] touched my lips, and I opened my mouth and began to speak. I said to the one standing before me, “I am overcome with anguish because of the vision, my lord, and I feel very weak. 17 How can I, your servant, talk with you, my lord? My strength is gone and I can hardly breathe.”
“18 Again the one who looked like a man touched me and gave me strength. 19 “Do not be afraid, you who are highly esteemed,” he said. “Peace! Be strong now; be strong.”
When he spoke to me, I was strengthened and said, “Speak, my lord, since you have given me strength.”
The vision overwhelmed Daniel once again, leaving him speechless and without strength.
The heavenly messenger touched Daniel a second time, giving him strength and peace.
He repeated the comforting words:
“Do not be afraid, you who are highly esteemed.”
As God’s strength filled Daniel, fear gave way to courage.
Only after God strengthened His servant was Daniel prepared to receive the remainder of the vision concerning future kingdoms and the spiritual conflict surrounding them.
God never calls His servants to stand alone.
He provides the strength needed to accomplish every assignment He gives.
📖 Daniel 10:20–21 (NIV)
“20 So he said, “Do you know why I have come to you? Soon I will return to fight against the prince of Persia, and when I go, the prince of Greece will come; 21 but first I will tell you what is written in the Book of Truth. (No one supports me against them except Michael, your prince.”
The messenger explained that spiritual conflict would continue between the prince of Persia and the coming prince of Greece.
Before returning to that battle, however, he would reveal to Daniel what was written in the Book of Truth.
Everything God revealed had already been established according to His eternal plan.
The kingdoms of earth would continue to rise and fall, but God’s purposes would never fail.
Behind every earthly kingdom stands the sovereign authority of the Lord, who directs history toward the fulfillment of His redemption plan through Jesus Christ.
Daniel’s vision reminds us that history is not controlled by kings, governments, or military power.
God remains sovereign over both the visible world and the unseen spiritual realm.
His covenant continues through every generation, and every prophecy moves history closer to the everlasting kingdom promised through Jesus Christ.
What appears to be chaos on earth is always under the authority of the Most High.
God hears sincere prayers from the moment they are offered.
Humility prepares the heart to receive God’s wisdom.
Spiritual battles often occur beyond what human eyes can see.
God’s angels minister according to His perfect will.
Earthly kingdoms rise and fall under God’s authority.
God’s covenant remains secure through every generation.
God strengthens His servants before giving them greater responsibility.
Every prophecy moves toward God’s redemption plan through Jesus Christ.
God’s Book of Truth never fails.
Daniel’s vision reminds us that God’s work extends far beyond what we can see. While nations struggle for power, heaven is accomplishing God’s eternal purposes. Daniel humbled himself, sought understanding through prayer, and was strengthened by God to receive His revelation. The Book of Truth assures every believer that history is unfolding exactly as God has ordained. His covenant remains secure, His promises never fail, and His everlasting kingdom will ultimately triumph through Jesus Christ, the King of kings.
