Now that I am a servant to Christ, how should I live?

A Servant of God: Their Actions Deny Him

A Servant of God: Their Actions Deny Him

Paul A Servant of God begins his letter to Titus by affirming God’s eternal promise of salvation through Jesus Christ and the importance of sound doctrine that leads to godly living. He instructs Titus to appoint faithful leaders, confront false teaching, and remind believers that genuine faith is revealed through obedient lives. Our actions should reflect the transforming grace and truth of God.

God’s Covenant • Salvation • Eternity • Faith • Living by the Spirit • Loyalty

📖 Titus 1:1

“1 Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ to further the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness—

A Servant of God and an Apostle of Jesus Christ

📖 Titus 1:2–4

“2 in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time, and which now at his appointed season he has brought to light through the preaching entrusted to me by the command of God our Savior,”

“4 To Titus, my true son in our common faith:”

Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.

Paul opens his letter by identifying himself as both a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ. His calling was to strengthen the faith of God’s elect and lead them into the knowledge of the truth that produces godliness.

Paul points believers to the hope of eternal life, promised by God before the beginning of time and revealed through Jesus Christ according to God’s appointed plan.

His greeting to Titus reminds us that God’s grace and peace are found in God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior. From the very beginning, Titus establishes that God’s covenant and redemption plan are founded upon His eternal promises, faithfully fulfilled through Christ.

Appoint Leaders of Godly Characters – A Servant of God

📖 Titus 1:5–9

“5 The reason I left you in Crete was that you might put in order what was left unfinished and appoint[a] elders in every town, as I directed you. An elder must be blameless, faithful to his wife, a man whose children believe[b] and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient.

“7 Since an overseer manages God’s household, he must be blameless—not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. Rather, he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined. He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.”

Paul explains why Titus remained in Crete—to complete the work that had been started by appointing qualified elders in every town.

Church leaders were to be men of proven character: blameless, faithful, self-controlled, hospitable, disciplined, and firmly grounded in God’s Word. Their responsibility extended beyond leading the church; they were to encourage believers with sound doctrine and protect them by refuting false teaching.

God’s church is strengthened when its leaders faithfully teach His truth and live lives that reflect the character of Jesus Christ.

Beware of False Teachers – A Servant of God

📖 Titus 1:10–16

“10 For there are many rebellious people, full of meaningless talk and deception, especially those of the circumcision group. 11 They must be silenced, because they are disrupting whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach—and that for the sake of dishonest gain.”

“12 One of Crete’s own prophets has said it: “Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.”[c] 13 This saying is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith 14 and will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the merely human commands of those who reject the truth.”

“15 To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted. 16 They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.”

Paul warns Titus about rebellious teachers who were misleading entire households through deception and false doctrine. Their motivation was personal gain rather than God’s glory.

Although some claimed to know God, their lives revealed something entirely different.

“They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him.”

Paul teaches that genuine faith cannot be separated from faithful living. Sound doctrine transforms both the mind and the heart, producing obedience, purity, and lives that honor God.

A profession of faith without a transformed life reveals a heart that has not fully submitted to the truth of God’s Word.

God’s Covenant Still Stands

God has always desired a people who faithfully represent Him.

Throughout Scripture, He calls leaders to teach His truth, protect His people, and lead by godly example.

Through Jesus Christ, believers are called into a covenant relationship marked by faith, holiness, and obedience. God’s redemption plan not only offers salvation but also transforms His people into living witnesses of His grace.

Our lives should confirm the faith we profess.
