📖 Revelation 6:1-2 (NIV)
6 I watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals. Then I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder, “Come!” 2 I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.
Jesus Christ, the worthy Lamb of God, begins opening the seven seals. As each seal is broken, God’s plan for the last days unfolds. These events reveal both His righteous judgment and His sovereign authority, reminding believers that God’s covenant, justice, and Redemption Plan are moving toward their promised fulfillment.
📖 Revelation 6:3–8 (NIV)
“3 When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Come!” 4 Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make people kill each other. To him was given a large sword.”
“5 When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. 6 Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, “Two pounds[a] of wheat for a day’s wages,[b] and six pounds[c] of barley for a day’s wages,[d] and do not damage the oil and the wine!”
“7 When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” 8 I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.”
As the Lamb opens the first four seals, four riders are sent across the earth.
These judgments remind us that the consequences of sin affect the whole world, yet every event remains under God’s authority.
📖 Revelation 6:9–11 (NIV)
“9 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. 10 They called out in a loud voice, “How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?” 11 Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer, until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters,[e] were killed just as they had been.”
John sees beneath the heavenly altar those who gave their lives because of the Word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ.
They cry out for God’s righteous justice.
Rather than immediate vengeance, they are given white robes and told to wait until God’s perfect timing is fulfilled.
God never forgets the faithfulness of those who remain obedient to Him.
📖 Revelation 6:12–17 (NIV)
“12 I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13 and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. 14 The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.”
“15 Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free, hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. 16 They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us[f] from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day of their[g] wrath has come, and who can withstand it?”
As the sixth seal is opened, the earth experiences a great earthquake, the sun grows dark, the moon turns red, and the heavens appear to roll back.
People of every nation and every social position recognize that these events come from the throne of God and the Lamb.
Instead of turning to God in repentance, many hide in caves, seeking refuge from His presence.
They ask the question that echoes throughout the chapter:
“Who can withstand it?”
The opening of the seals demonstrates that history unfolds according to God’s perfect plan.
Nothing occurs outside His authority.
Even in judgment, God remains faithful to His covenant and continues carrying out His Redemption Plan through Jesus Christ.
His justice is perfect, His timing is certain, and His promises never fail.
Jesus Christ alone has authority to open the seven seals.
God’s judgments unfold according to His perfect will.
Sin brings conflict, suffering, famine, and death.
God remembers those who remain faithful to His testimony.
His justice will come at the appointed time.
Earthly power cannot stand against God’s authority.
Repentance should never be delayed.
God’s covenant remains secure throughout history.
The Lamb who brings salvation is also the righteous Judge.
Hope is found only through faith in Jesus Christ.
Revelation 6 reminds us that the Lamb who redeemed the world also carries out God’s righteous judgment. As the seals are opened, humanity witnesses the certainty of God’s Word and the fulfillment of His promises. While many respond with fear and seek to hide, God continues to call people to faith, repentance, and salvation through Jesus Christ. The question, “Who can withstand it?” points us to the only true refuge—the grace and mercy found in the Lamb of God.
