“37 Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan.”
Genesis now shifts its focus from Jacob to his son Joseph.
The covenant promises given to:
Abraham
Isaac
Israel
continue moving forward through the next generation.
Joseph enters the story as a young man of seventeen years old, unaware that God is preparing him for a future far greater than he can imagine.
What begins as a story of family tension will eventually reveal God’s providence, protection, and faithfulness.
📖 Genesis 37:2 (NIV)
“2 This is the account of Jacob’s family line. Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them.”
Joseph worked alongside his brothers tending the family flocks.
Scripture tells us that he brought a bad report to his father concerning some of their behavior.
Whether motivated by honesty, concern, or youthful immaturity, the report did not improve the relationship between Joseph and his brothers.
Family tensions were already beginning to grow.
📖 Genesis 37:3–4 (NIV)
“3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate[a] robe for him. 4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.”
Israel loved Joseph more than his other sons.
Joseph had been born during Israel’s later years and was the first son of Rachel, the wife he loved deeply.
To express this affection, Israel gave Joseph an ornate robe.
The robe became a visible symbol of favor.
When Joseph’s brothers saw it, they understood exactly what it represented.
As a result:
resentment grew
bitterness increased
relationships weakened
Scripture says:
“They hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.”
Favoritism within a family often creates wounds that reach far beyond the moment.
📖 Genesis 37:5–8 (NIV)
“5 Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. 6 He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had: 7 We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.”8 His brothers said to him, “Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said.”
Joseph received a dream from God.
In the dream, the brothers were binding sheaves of grain in a field.
Joseph’s sheaf stood upright while the sheaves of his brothers bowed before it.
When Joseph shared the dream, his brothers immediately understood its meaning.
They asked:
“Do you intend to reign over us?”
Rather than considering that God might be revealing something important, they allowed jealousy to shape their response.
The dream increased their hatred.
📖 Genesis 37:9–10 (NIV)
9 Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.”
10 When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?”
Joseph later received another dream.
This time:
the sun
the moon
eleven stars
bowed down before him.
The symbolism pointed not only to his brothers but also to the entire family.
Even Israel questioned Joseph about the dream.
The message seemed impossible.
How could the youngest members of the family someday receive honor from those older than themselves?
Yet God was revealing His future plans long before anyone could understand them.
📖 Genesis 37:11 (NIV)
“11 His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.”
The brothers’ emotions continued growing darker.
Scripture says:
“His brothers were jealous of him.”
Jealousy rarely remains small.
If left unchecked, it often grows into:
bitterness
anger
resentment
hatred
The brothers focused on Joseph’s position instead of God’s purposes.
Their jealousy blinded them to what God might have been doing.
While the brothers reacted with anger, Israel responded differently.
Scripture says:
“His father kept the matter in mind.”
Although he questioned the dream, he did not dismiss it completely.
He remembered it.
He considered it.
He waited.
Sometimes God’s plans are not immediately understood, but wisdom allows room for God to reveal His purposes over time.
The dreams were not merely about Joseph.
They pointed toward God’s larger covenant plan.
The same God who spoke to:
Abraham
Isaac
Israel
was now beginning to work through Joseph.
Although hardship would soon follow, God was already preparing the path ahead.
The covenant promises remained alive.
This passage reminds us:
jealousy can destroy relationships
favoritism often creates division
God sometimes reveals His plans before we understand them
hatred often begins with unchecked envy
wisdom waits for God’s timing
God’s purposes continue despite family conflict

Genesis 37 begins one of the most remarkable stories in Scripture. Joseph was loved by his father, blessed with dreams, and chosen for a purpose he could not yet see. Yet the very blessings God placed upon his life became the source of jealousy and hatred among his brothers.
This chapter reminds us that God’s favor does not always lead to immediate acceptance. Sometimes the path toward God’s purpose begins with misunderstanding, opposition, and hardship. Even so, the Lord was already working behind the scenes, guiding Joseph toward a future that would fulfill His covenant promises and bless many lives.
