Tug Of War

a blink of an eye, tug of war

The Tug of War Between Human Flesh and Spirit.

The tug of war, here is an analogy for reacting to human flesh or emotion. A person reacts in a way that offends you. Your first thought is to tell that person something you wish you hadn’t. However, if you listen to your spiritual side, you will be nice, smile, say something pleasant, or say nothing and go on with your business.

The Bible often addresses the conflict between the desires of the human flesh and the aspirations of the spirit. This internal struggle is a central theme in Christian theology, emphasizing the need for believers to live according to the Spirit rather than succumbing to the sinful nature of the flesh.

The more you live by spirit the more intuitive you become, and words flow good and freely from you.

1. Galatians 5:16-17

Paul writes, “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.”

  • Interpretation: This passage highlights the constant battle between the flesh and the Spirit. Walking by the Spirit helps believers overcome fleshly desires.

2. Romans 7:18-25

Paul confesses, “For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. … Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!”

  • Interpretation: Paul expresses the frustration of wanting to do good but being hindered by sinful nature. He points to Jesus Christ as the deliverer from this struggle.

3. Romans 8:5-8

“Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.”

  • Interpretation: This passage contrasts the outcomes of living by the flesh versus living by the Spirit. It underscores the importance of setting one’s mind on the Spirit for true life and peace.

4. 1 Peter 2:11

“Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.”

  • Interpretation: Peter warns believers to abstain from sinful desires, acknowledging that these desires wage a spiritual war within.

5. James 4:1-3

“What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God.”

  • Interpretation: James identifies the root of external conflicts as internal desires, emphasizing the need to seek God rather than worldly desires.

6. 1 John 2:16-17

“For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.”

  • Interpretation: John warns against the transient nature of worldly desires and encourages doing the will of God for eternal life.

Overview:

The Bible consistently teaches that the desires of the flesh are in direct conflict with the aspirations of the Spirit. This spiritual battle requires believers to consciously choose to live by the Spirit, seeking God’s guidance and strength to overcome the temptations of the flesh. By focusing on spiritual growth and relying on God’s power, Christians can navigate this internal struggle and live a life that honors God.
