The resurrection of Jesus is not only a moment in history. Walking With the Risen Savior, it is a living reality that meets us on the road of confusion, disappointment, and doubt. Luke 24:13–35 gives one of the most intimate encounters with the risen Christ as two disciples walk toward Emmaus, unaware that the Savior Himself has joined them.
Two disciples were walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus, discussing everything that had happened. “As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him” (vv. 15–16).
He asked what they were talking about, and they replied with sadness, “We had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel” (v. 21). They explained the crucifixion and the report of the empty tomb.
Jesus responded, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” (vv. 25–26). He then explained the Scriptures concerning Himself, beginning with Moses and all the prophets.
When they reached their destination, they urged Him to stay. At the table, “He took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight” (vv. 30–31).
They said to one another, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” (v. 32).
Immediately, they returned to Jerusalem and told the others, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.”They also shared how Jesus was made known to them in the breaking of the bread (vv. 34–35).
This powerful encounter shows us what Jesus continues to do for every believer:
The disciples were heartbroken, confused, and certain things had gone wrong — and yet Jesus was already beside them.
Today, He still meets His followers in their discouragement and doubt.
Before their eyes were opened, their hearts were opened.
Jesus used the Word to show how every prophecy pointed to Him.
Understanding increases when the Word is illuminated by the presence of Christ.
The moment Jesus broke bread, they recognized Him.
It is often in communion, slow reflection, worship, or fellowship that Jesus becomes clearer to us.
Once they understood who He was, they immediately returned to Jerusalem.
True encounters with Jesus turn sorrow into passion and silence into testimony.
